How does a hot creamy bowl of oatmeal topped with nutritious nuts and fruits sound to you? You really can’t find a better way to start your day with this heart healthy winter breakfast .

Oats in general have many health benefits. They are high in fiber, protein, manganese, zinc and other minerals. They can also help lower cholesterol.  I prefer steel cut oats over rolled oats. Not only do they taste better but they are also the least processed type of oats. I don’t cook steel cut oats very often because they take longer to cook. I typically just cook my oatmeal with water, but when I want a creamier texture I like using coconut milk. It’s a great alternative to cow’s milk, specifically for those who are lactose intolerant. Here’s one of the many ways to enjoy a bowl of steel cut oats.

Instructions
Steel cut oats
  1. Bring the water to a boil and pour in the oats and salt, reduce heat and simmer for about 25 to 30 minutes. Once cooked add coconut cream, maple syrup and vanilla
Toppings
  1. Pour half the mixture into a bowl, top it off with a sliced banana, walnuts, cacao nibs and sesame seeds
