Is Gluten Free Healthy?

Is gluten free healthy? This is probably a question you might’ve wondered about. Maybe you’ve considered going gluten free, because your friends are talking about how great they feel without gluten in their diets. Maybe you’ve read somewhere that there are many reasons to go gluten free while others say the exact opposite. And now you’re wondering; is gluten free healthy for me?

Is gluten free healthy?

First of all, let me just explain quickly what gluten is. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and derivatives of these grains. A gluten-free diet is traditionally used to treat individuals that suffer from Celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine that is triggered by an individual’s intolerance or hypersensitivity to gluten. Common symptoms of Celiac include abdominal bloating, gas, diarrhea, pale stools, weight loss, stomach pain, skin rashes, anemia, chronic fatigue, brain fog, seizures, tingling sensations, ulcers, and muscle, joint, bone cramps, and pains.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to have full-blown Celiac disease to experience these symptoms. Many people have varying levels of gluten intolerant, and therefor have a very positive experience when going gluten free or at least eliminate gluten from their diet.

So a quick answer to; is gluten free healthy

Yes, if you do have the symptoms I mentioned. If you’ve noticed that anytime you eat gluten you get too bloated, or too gassy, get skin rashes and so on, then going gluten free is healthy for you.

BUT, here’s the problem with gluten free foods. Just because a food product is gluten free doesn’t mean it’s healthy! Coke is gluten free, but we all know that it’s not healthy. Most gluten free items are higher in sugar and contain more “weird” ingredients than the original gluten product, because the “glue” effect that gluten has on foods, needs to be replaced with other weird ingredients (think highly processed vegetable oils, food coloring, artificial sweeteners etc). Gluten free junk food, is still junk food. So if you’re not gluten intolerant, but still aim for the gluten free junk food product because you think it’s healthier, you’re wrong!

What if I truly feel better on a gluten free diet?

If you feel better on a gluten free diet, then by all means eliminate gluten from your diet. But if you’re doing it to have yet another excuse to go on a diet, then don’t. The only problem I have is that the gluten free industry tries to make us think that gluten free is healthier than the original gluten containing product.

There are tons of foods that are naturally gluten free. Meats, fruits, vegetables, potatoes, corn, rice, quinoa, millet etc. Now, that’s much healthier to eat this type of gluten free foods, than gluten free junk food. Not saying to never eat those, just to not let the gluten free industry fool you!

 BONUS TIP:

How is your mindset when you’re eating? A lot of times, even if we’re not allergic to something but keep telling ourselves thoughts like;

“I’m going to break out if I eat this”

“This bread is going to make me fat and go straight to my belly”

I think a lot of times we mentally make ourselves intolerant to certain foods, put more stress on our mind and bodies and end up having a physical reaction when we do eat that food. Do you see how that’s also a lot of stress on your digestive system? And your body will have a harder time digesting that food, whereas if you’re more relaxed while eating it’s much easier on your digestion!
